World We Dare to Imagine P3: Aloha Bowl Co.   About Aloha Bowl Co is a family-owned and operated Hawaiian poke restaurant located in the heart of San Diego, CA. We're committed to serving up only the best and sustainably sourced cuts of fish in our traditional Hawaiian-style poke bowls. As someone who grew up near the beach and has always loved seafood, I care deeply about the ocean and its fish. I still remember the first time my dad had me try fish when I was just six years old, and I’ve been hooked ever since! Since then, I've always appreciated the delicate flavors and textures of seafood and have been committed to supporting sustainable fishing practices. At Aloha Bowl Co, we're dedicated to bringing a taste of Hawaii to San Diego. We're inspired by the traditional Hawaiian-style poke ingredients and exploring new ways to innovate and create new poke bowl flavors. Come join our ohana and discover the joy of delicious poke, good vibes, and the spirit of aloha. Miss...

World We Dare to Imagine Pt 1

Image
World We Dare to Imagine Pt 1 I can think of multiple ways I can make the world a better place, however, one particular idea stands out to me. One of my passions is to start a poke bowl restaurant in Southern California (Los Angeles or San Diego area) that embodies sustainable practices and my personal values of empathy, kindness, and open-mindedness. My restaurant would be named something along the lines of Surfside Bowls, Pacific Bowl Co., Priceless Poke, or Poke Paradise. At my restaurant, I want to prioritize sustainability by sourcing fish that is sustainably caught and using eco-friendly dishes and silverware. I believe that supporting sustainable practices is crucial to preserving the environment for future generations. A big problem in the world as far as sustainability goes is overfishing and unsustainable fishing practices. Overfishing leads to an imbalance of fish that can harm the food web and lead to the loss of valuable marine life. Therefore, I think it's important t...

Flow

The Flow State Cooking, snowboarding, skiing, spikeball, surfing, lifting weights, running, and backpacking—those are activities where I feel like I am in a state of flow. I learned about flow in my Science of Peak Performance class at USC, taught by Professor Glenn Fox. Glenn Fox brought in a guest speaker who is an expert in flow, named Matt Dubin. According to Dubin, who is the co-founder of the Venn Collective and a pioneer in the study of flow, "flow is the state of frictionless peak performance." In other words, it's where you are "in the zone." There are three preconditions of flow: having a clear goal (knowing what you're working towards), gaining immediate feedback from the task itself, and having a balance between challenge and skill. I'm going to go over two things in this post. First, activities where I feel like I am in a state of flow, and second, how you can find your own flow. As someone that naturally likes to be busy and active, my flo...

Book 2, Post 2

I really enjoyed reading The Wayfinders: Why Ancient Wisdom Matters in the Modern World by Wade Davis. I found this book to be very interesting and reading it was an enriching experience for me as I did not previously know much about the ancient people, practices, and cultures that came before us. Through the various stories and personal anecdotes told by Davis, I gained a new appreciation for indigenous cultures around the world. I found myself reflecting on my relationship with the natural world and the cultural traditions and practices that I see that shape my view. In a way, Western Culture has separated us from the natural world and this has heavily contributed to environmental issues and cultural homogenization we see today. I have an even stronger desire to travel the world and learn about the different cultures that exist in the different countries as well as their cultural traditions they have and ones that have existed before them as well. I enjoyed each of the different cha...

Book 2, Post 1

I chose to read The Wayfinders: Why Ancient Wisdom Matters in the Modern World by Wade Davis. I chose to read this book because I was interested after reading what it's all about. I think it's very interesting to learn about indigenous cultures and know more about their history. I got interested in learning more about indigenous cultures when I was 16 and we went on a family vacation to Maui. On the vacation, we did this island road trip called the Road to Hana. During this trip to Hana, we listened to a tour guide on an app who told us all about the indigenous people of Hawaii and how the Polynesians were the first to discover and explore Hawaii. I found it very interesting and important to know about the culture that was the first to discover a place I now love to visit so much. When I was in high school, I took a course called "Ancient Civilizations" and I found it fascinating as well. I learned all about civilizations from thousands of years ago and it was mind o...

The Beauty of Travel  “Ya mon no problem” was a phrase I heard in Jamaica many times. Jamaicans, who are extremely nice and welcoming, are known for running a bit late and not having a real sense of urgency to get somewhere on time. I learn new things about different cultures every time I travel. Traveling is one of my favorite things to do. I love exploring new places, trying new foods at that place, experiencing new adventures, and making new memories. I think traveling is one of the best things to do with your money as those memories you make from traveling last a lifetime. Outside of the U.S. I’ve only been to Jamaica and Mexico (4 times). However, I have done a good amount of traveling in the U.S. I’ve been to three of the islands in Hawaii (Maui, Kauai, and Oahu), New York, Virginia, Maryland, Oregon, Washington, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Illinois, Michigan, Nevada, and all over California. I love exploring and adventuring more than anything in the world. While some of my fri...
